Odisha Hospital Appoints Transgender Security Guards


Odisha government launched the Nirmal Scheme in 2018 to provide better healthcare facilities. The scheme was launched in Odisha’s various hospitals. The scheme focuses on providing facilities like cleanliness, hiring people for the post of security gaurds, and providing cheap medicines in the hospital pharmacy shops. The scheme wants to empower the LGBTQIA+ community. LGBTQIA+ stands for Lesbians, Gays and ‘T’ stands for Transgender. A male wishing to transform his body to female or a female wishing to transform her body to male is called Transgender and this is the sign name. The authorities in Odisha’s Malkangiri District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) have appointed five transgender individuals as security guards to work in the hospital. The hospital decided to employ them. The five transgender persons will work as security guards at the gynaecology and paediatrics wards of the hospital. They will receive a monthly remuneration of ₹7000 to ₹8000 with insurance and other facilities. The 5 transgender’s were trained by the Malkangiri District Police before they started the job with the DHH. One of the five transgender persons said they underwent training of 15 days at the hospital. Once they learnt everything, the five of them began working and are extremely happy about it. They stay at the hospital for 8-hours every day during which they take care of the patients and are very happy. The Odisha government had also announced a number of healthcare projects. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had announced many benefits for the Malkangiri hospitals. Doctors working in shifts will be given rooms to rest in, and families of the patients will be given accomadation. Once they find a place to stay others can use it. Many such benefits will be given.
